Does Organic Dishwashing Soap Work as Well as Regular Soap?

Written By Mike Ntobi on Saturday, October 06, 2012 | 11:50 PM

There are many different dishwashing soaps and detergents on the shelves at the supermarket.  There are soaps that will make your hands feel smoother and soaps that can heal damage that has already been done to your hands.

The number of detergents might be even more plentiful.  There are detergents that will just wash your clothes and laundry detergents that will completely bleach your clothes.  Did you know that both of these products are actually available in a healthier and organic form?

That’s right!  Just like you can buy milk, cheese, and other products that are organic, you can also purchase dishwashing soap and detergent with the same properties.  However, products like this are more likely to be expensive, right?  So, should you buy them or leave them sitting on store shelves?

Why Organic Soaps Are Safer

Natural dishwashing soaps and detergents are actually better for you.  Regular soaps are full of harmful toxins because they contain synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde, silicones, acrylates, preservatives, and genetically modified organisms.  These are only a few of the many harmful ingredients that make up your dish soap.

Moreover, did you know that formaldehyde has been associated with cancer?  That is the last thing that you want to wash your family dishes in!

Foam builders and coloring agents can also be incredibly bad for you, but they’re not even really needed to ensure cleanliness.  Your dishes could be thoroughly cleaned without ever using any of these items!

Some of the harmful effects associated with non-organic dish soaps are rashes, breakdown of the skin, chafing, and skin irritation.  Washing dishes tends to dry your hands out enough without worrying about these harmful side effects.

Why Organic Materials Are Better For the Environment

Don’t let the fact that you own a nice, sturdy pair of dishwashing gloves keep you using your old dishwashing soap because it’s not just bad for your hands.  When the contaminated water goes down the drain, the toxins contained in the non-organic dishwashing liquid soak into the soil.  These toxins harm the fish we eat and they even harm wild land animals when they drink from streams and groundwater ponds.

If you’re thinking that it might be time for you to switch over to a special dish detergent, you’re making a decision that is not only good for your skin, but good for our planet as well.  Choosing between detergents that are synthetic and those that are organic can be tough.  You should look for detergents and soaps that have been “organically certified.”

How to Make the Choice

Like other products, however, companies can create soaps that appear to be something they’re not.  You’ll need to carefully read soap and detergent labels before you make your purchase to be sure you’re purchasing something that is authentic.

You should always avoid purchasing products with labels that say things such as “warning” or “danger”.  If you come into contact with any of these words, you’ll know you’re looking at a product that is not only non-organic, but unhealthy.  Instead, choose healthy, plant-based organic dishwashing products that contain olive oil and coconut oil.

What is Bark Off and Does it Work to Stop Dogs Barking?

If your dog goes crazy barking every time a car goes past... or a pedestrian... or a bike... or a cat... you'll know how frustrating and annoying this can become, both to you and your neighbors.  The product Bark Off is supposed to curb your dog’s desire to bark, but how does it work, does it do everything that it claims to do?

The device claims to be humane because it emits an ultrasonic signal each time the dog barks.  Bark Off's reasoning is that the unusual sound causes the dog to stop barking and to listen to that signal.  They claim that disruption of the barking pattern can teach your dog not to bark.

One of the benefits of Bark Off is that it doesn’t use electric shocks like some of its competitors on the market do.  You can use it either inside or outside, it doesn't require much setup, and Bark Off will not affect the other pets you have in your house.  What are people who bought the product saying about it though?

Reviews of the pet product seem to be a mixed bag.  Some people who’ve bought and used it for the dogs they own say that Bark Off worked for some breeds, but not others.  The smaller dogs seemed to continue with their barking, while larger dogs stopped.  Other people claim that Bark Off didn’t do anything at all to help stop their animal from barking.  Others claimed that the product worked at first, but then when the novelty value wore off their dog learned to ignore the sound and continue barking.

However, one thing that most of the users have said is that even when Bark Off works, it is only a temporary solution.  It only works as long as the dog is wearing the collar and doesn’t actually “retrain” the dog to keep quiet.  If the collar is removed or your dog learns to live with the annoying sound, their barking problem will continue.

In this sense, it is not a replacement in any way for proper dog training classes, or day to day owner-imposed discipline to curb your dog's problem barking.

Top Hidden Dangers in Your Kitchen

We often take our safety and well-being for granted, especially when we are in the comfort of our own home.  Surely, nothing inside of our own house can harm us, right?  However, there are hidden dangers in the kitchen appliances that we use on a daily basis, which could cause injury and must be used with caution.

While this article shouldn't cause you to develop a phobia of going into your own kitchen, there are a number of actual dangers that you do need to consider.  The good news is that when you realize that those dangers are present, you can take steps to improve the safety for you and your family.

One of the first things that you are going to want to do is get into the habit of regularly checking the electrical cords on all of your appliances.  Check to see that they are secure and that none of the cords are frayed and that no wires are exposed.  Exposed wire can cause electrical fires.  If you notice a frayed cord, you might be tempted to cover it up with electrical tape.  While this is an option, it's not always a good one, and can also cause fire.  Have the cord replaced or buy a new appliance.

Another one of the hidden dangers of many kitchen appliances is simple carelessness.  Never reach your hand into a blender that is plugged into the outlet.  Never reach your hand into the garbage disposal or try to stick a utensil in when it is on.  Never use a knife to remove a piece of toast from your toaster because it's metal touching metal, with electricity involved.

These are simple, common sense things that you wouldn’t normally do.  However, they do constitute a lot of the accidents people tend to have with kitchen appliances, and it's always better safe than sorry.

5 Easy Ways to Become More Eco-Friendly

The majority of us care about the environment, but feel a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of wastage and pollution caused by people not recycling.  Don't let the scale of the issue prevent you from taking your own first step towards becoming more eco-friendly.  Every little action really does help, and if everyone makes just one small change in their lives, they soon add up on a massive scale.

There are a lot of different ways you can become more eco-friendly and feel like you are making a difference.  Simple changes can make a huge difference and everyone can contribute in their own way.

Here are 5 simple things you can do to become more eco-friendly in your daily life:

Tip #1: Recycle!

it may seem like an overstated eco-friendly contribution, but recycling is crucial if you want to make a difference.  The good news is that recycling is easy!  There are so many things you can recycle, such as: batteries, aluminum, steel, paper (books, paper bills, magazines, etc.), cell phones, computers, plastic, glass, old clothing, etc.

The first thing you have to do is go to your local recycling program and figure out if they have any special requirements and what materials they accept, how they are sorted and cleaned.  A helpful tip when you are recycling plastic bottles is to always take the cap off, because it makes the bottle easier to crush and break down.  Always rinse items such as bottles or containers as some items are still sorted by hand, so you'll be helping the health of the workers who do this tough but essential job.  Make sure when you are recycling paper that all staples are taken out and it hasn’t been contaminated with food.  Wax paper, used tissues and carbon paper cannot be recycled.

Look in your community for ways to recycle.  For example if you have a Whole Foods Market you can recycle all the glass milk and soda bottles you have.  All you have to do is rinse them and take them in for a credit.  If you're near a Walmart, Henrys or Traders Joes, they often have a place where you can recycle plastic grocery bags.   Movies and DVDs can also be recycled.  You can go to GreenDisk (www.greendisk.com) and they will safely and securely recycle all of your media, tapes, computer drives, communication devices, batteries, small electronics, film and miscellaneous items such as keyboards, mice, UPS units, etc.

These are just a few things you can recycle and tips on how to get started.  It is very simple and it doesn’t require much additional time or effort, you simply have to inform yourself and get started!

Tip #2: Bring Your Own Grocery Bag

This is very simple and costs nothing.  Many grocery stores will give cash incentives to those that bring their own grocery bags, which is fantastic!  You can keep them in your car, which makes it very simple and convenient.  This is an easy and great way to become more eco-friendly and make a difference.

Tip #3: Buy Items That are Recycled or Environmentally Friendly

There are many companies that are trying to make a difference and by buying their products you are contributing as well.  Some make packaging from recycled sources and others contribute a percentage of their sales to a foundation that helps the environment.  You can also buy items such as 100% recycled paper towels, toilet paper and printing paper.  Always be on the look out for “green” and recycled items.

Tip #4: Buy Local!

Buying local is a way you can help the planet and your local community at the same time.  Buying from a local business usually means that more money is used to purchase from other local businesses and services, therefore strengthening the economic base of your local community.  Locally owned businesses generally make more local purchases requiring less transportation.  This helps protect the environment from harmful exhaust fumes from planes, trucks and trains which are used to import and ship goods bought in other countries or even just in another state.

Buying local also helps create jobs as the businesses in your community thrive and grow.  Many local business owners are residents, which means they are invested in the future and growth of the community.  Look for locally grown labels when you go grocery shopping and always pay attention where the item came from.  This will immediately help you become more eco-friendly.

Tip #5: Carpool

Carpooling means sharing a car with another person.  The vast majority of cars on our freeways at any given time contain just one person.  Think about it - if everyone carpooled with just one other person, we would instantly cut the traffic clogging our roads in half!  By carpooling, you reduce air pollution, congestion and fossil fuel usage, while saving you money and time.  You will most likely have a much more pleasant commute by using the carpool lanes and getting to work without having to deal with the morning traffic.  This will make your morning routine less stressful and rushed.  You can also save money on the wear and tear of your vehicle and imagine all the savings from the gas alone!

These 5 things you can do to become more eco-friendly are just a few ideas to get you started and when added up, they all make a big difference.  Each individual will find the best and most convenient way to be eco-friendly, so everyone can make their own unique contribution.  It is very easy and certainly rewarding, so don’t waste any time and get started!
