Reuters’ Alertnet reports on a new online tool for mapping conflicts in Africa:

A new online data tool for monitoring conflict trends in Africa can help governments and aid workers to analyse the impact of political, social and armed conflicts on communities, its creators said. By combining mapping, analysis and raw data from thousands of emerging and historical conflicts, the CCAPS Conflict Dashboard enables users to assess trends and detailed event data simultaneously.

Is It Time For The First African Pope?

Ghanaian cardinal Peter Turkson, at a relatively sprightly 64 years old, is a widespread favourite for the job. Betting house William Hill has named Turkson as a 3/1 favourite, while he is also the favourite at Ladbrokes.

Other African cardinals that have been listed as possibilities for the job are Cardinal Polycalp Pengo of Tanzania, Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, the 74-year-old Archbishop of Kinshasa Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya of DRC and 69-year-old Nigerian John Onaiyekan, 69, the Abuja archbishop.

Reports that the next pope may come from Africa rise from the growth of the Catholic faith in the southern hemisphere, particularly Africa and Latin America.

As much as many people would like to see an African pope elected, the demographics of the College of Cardinals makes this extremely unlikely. The college is made up of 117 members, of which only 18 are from Africa.

In an interview with with The Associated Press earlier this week, Turkson humbly fielded suggestions that he might be the next pope, saying: "I've always answered 'if it's the will of God', being the pope of the church is not going to be an easy task." The Ghanaian added: "We need to repair our credibility. Our pastors need to be believed in again and recognised and taken seriously. If we say we are celibate clergy, we need to live faithfully to that celibacy. There's one thing we can't compromise on and that's our credibility."

R.I.P. Goldie Harvey - "Prezzo's Fiancee"

 

     

Following her sudden death on Valentine’s Day, we remember Nigerian singer and star Goldie Harvey.

Harvey passed away at the Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos after a short illness. The former Big Brother housemate died shortly after returning from the Grammy Awards in the US.

The singer first shot to fame in 2006 when she released her debut album Spin Me. Harvey was a contestant on Big Brother Africa in 2012. While on the show she met and started a relationship with Kenyan star Prezzo. 

"Goldie, 31, died on Thursday after she complained of a severe headache shortly after her arrival from the United States where she went to witness the Grammy Awards. She was rushed from her Park View, Ikoyi, Lagos residence to her official hospital, Reddington, Victoria Island, Lagos, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival at exactly 7:30pm in the evening," the statement posted on Facebook said. 

"We consider this period a gloomy moment for us and the entire Nigerian music industry in view of the circumstance in which she passed away; the abundance of talent she exhibited in her short but eventful music career and the various opportunities her trip to the United States of America would have availed her. 

"She is survived by her father, step- mother, brothers and sisters. We deeply sympathise with her family and fans all over the world and very grateful to all and sundry, especially, the vibrant Nigerian media for their concern and prompt reportage. We shall keep everybody informed as events unfold as we are devastated by the sudden loss.” 

According to reports, Harvey’s sudden passing has been attributed to pneumonia. Fans are gathering outside the Lagos hospital where she passed to mourn the star.

Kanye West Might Be Working on New Music With Will Smith in Brazil

Eezy was photographed in a recording studio with the Fresh Prince and seen in a video trying his hand at samba music.

While vacationing with his pregnant partner Kim Kardashian in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, G.O.O.D Music mogul Kanye West might be mixing business with pleasure. The Grammy-winning artist has been photographed with Will Smith inside a studio and was seen in a clip trying his hand at some tambourine-playing.

Yeezy and the Fresh Prince were snapped hanging out in a recording studio which sparked speculations that the two might be collaborating on new music, perhaps for West's new album. Known to go outside the U.S. to do some of his recordings, West is in fact going to Paris to meet up with his "No Church in the Wild" collaborator The-Dream to work on Yeezy's next album.

Whether they were actually recording or not, what can be assumed is West is currently trekking across South America hoping to find some musical inspiration. In a short clip, West is seen jamming in Rio with a few certified samba musicians, guiding him along as he struggled with playing a tambourine.

Because of his trip, West wasn't able to attend the Grammy Awards show on Sunday night. He couldn't be at the Staples Center to personally receive his three Grammy trophies, one of which was for Best Rap Performance with close friend Jay-Z. Jigga, on the other hand, was very much present to receive the award on Yeezy's behalf and took the stage to deliver the rapping part during Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie" performance that night.

Grammys 2013 Performances: Elton John, Justin Timberlake, Miranda Lambert and Fun.

British newcomer Ed Sheeran performed for the first time on the Grammy stage with no less than Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Elton John. The two English musicians teamed up for Sheeran's "The a Team", which was nominated for Song of the Year. The legendary "Piano Man" showed off his key-playing talent along with the 21-year-old strumming his guitar on the set of the 55th annual Grammy Awards live from the Los Angeles Staples Center.

In his suit and bowtie, Justin Timberlake performed his new hit song "Suit & Tie" with rap superstar Jay-Z, and another new track from his "The 20/20 Experience" album, "Little Pusher Love Girl". The 32-year-old entertainer's much-awaited Grammy performance was introduced by Jay-Z's wife Beyonce Knowles and TV host/comedienne Ellen DeGeneres.

Best Country Album nominee Miranda Lambert performed with 29-year-old country crooner Dierks Bentley for a medley of "Home" and "Over You". In another collaboration, R'n'B-soul artist Miguel, nominated for five Grammy awards, was joined onstage by rapper Wiz Khalifa for "Adorn". The two also presented Kelly Clarkson with the Best Pop Vocal Album trophy after their performance.

Best New Artist winner Fun. performed their new song "Carry On". Nate Ruess and the rest of the band was soaked onstage as water drizzled from the top of the stripped-down set where they played. They followed Taylor Swift's circus-themed opener that kicked off Sunday night's award ceremony.

RiRi performs her new song 'Stay', Swift kicks off the show with 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together', while Keys and Maroon 5 team up for a mash-up of 'Daylight' and 'Girl on Fire'. 

Rihanna performed her new single "Stay" at the 55th Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 10 live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The 24-year-old stunner, in a vintage Azzedine Alaia gown, veered away from her usual choreagoraphy-laden dance performances to deliver the slow ballad with collaborator Mikky Ekko. 

Contrary to rumors that reunited boyfriend Chris Brown was going to join her, the controversial rapper merely watched Rihanna dish out her intimate rendition. He gave her a rousing standing ovation along with the audience who applauded her soulful performance.

Album of the Year winner Mumford & Sons performed their hit song "I Will Wait" from their Billboard top ten album "Babel". Marcus Mumford and his band mates delighted the crowd which included show opener Taylor Swift who was spotted in the audience singing along to the guitar-heavy number.

Swift took the stage earlier that night, singing her hit song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together". Donning a white magician-like outfit, she performed on an elaborate set which had an "Alice in Wonderland" theme.

In a unique team up, Adam Levine and Maroon 5 mashed up their single "Daylight" with Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire". In contrast to her usual set-up of playing behind a grand piano, the R'n'B diva opted to pick-up drumsticks and tap away at a pair of drums for a rhythmic rendition of her smash hit. Although the joint performance onstage was an unlikely pairing, they managed to pull off the rare soul/R'n'B and pop rock collaboration, being top live acts individually.

Whitney Houston's Mom on Granddaughter Bobbi Kristina: I Don't Want to Jinx Her

Writing in her memoir 'Remembering Whitney', Cissy Houston says she's worried her granddaughter will follow the late diva's path, stating, 'I'm trying to make sure she doesn't. 

   

Nearly a year after Whitney Houston's sudden passing, the diva's mom Cissy Houston opens up publicly for the first time about what happened to Whitney's only daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, following the singer's untimely death on February 11, 2012. In her new book, "Remembering Whitney", Cissy shares that Bobbi's "not handling it good."

Sharing that she's worried about Whitney's teenage daughter, Cissy says, "Of course I worry about her. Bobbi Kristina is 19 and if you know anything about a 19-year-old, they think they know it all." The Houston matriarch adds, "It doesn't mean that she is going to follow her [mother's] same path. She could but anybody could. I don't want to jinx her. I'm trying to make sure she doesn't."

"Remembering Whitney", which will be published by Harper Collins on January 28, features a very candid account of the "I Will Always Love You" hitmaker's troubled life. In the book, it is revealed that in 2005, the late songstress (known by the family as "Nippy") brought Bobbi along with her to rehab center as a part of the treatment.

"I think Nippy wanted her to understand what she was struggling with," Cissy explains why Whitney took Bobbi with her to rehab. "She wanted to explain it to her, maybe so Krissi wouldn't wander down the same path herself when her time came."

Furthermore, Cissy admits that her granddaughter doesn't always keep in touch with her. "She's a typical young girl. Nobody calls their grandmother. [But] I'm here if she needs anything," the 79-year-old lady says, before adding that she's fine with Bobbi's career as a reality TV star. "I think she'd make a really good actress. Singer, I don't know...," she states.

In the memoir, Cissy also writes about her daughter's ex-husband Bobby Brown, who's believed to become a bad influence in the diva's drug addiction issue. "He didn't help her, that's for damn sure," she opens up. "I tried to tell Nippy that I didn't think Bobby was good for her."

Bobby is reportedly unhappy with the way the Houston senior describes him. A business associate of Bobby tells Chicage Sun Times that the R'n'B singer "knows where he stands with Cissy and her relatively low opinion of him doesn't come as any surprise, but he doesn't like the overall tone of the book, which he thinks is Cissy's way of trying to assuage her conscience about not doing enough to prevent Whitney's death."
