Where does the history of black haircare in this country begin?
“I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations….I have built my own factory on my own ground.”
~ Madam C.J. Walker
Sarah Breedlove, better known as Madam C.J. Walker, created a successful hair empire in the late 1800′s, including, among other things, scalp conditioners, the permanent wave machine, and the pressing comb. Since those times, black hair and the hair care industry has catapulted to a billion-dollar business.
Here are some of the looks that keep that business booming throughout the decades.
