The Tanzanian police force has launched a three-year action plan to fight gender-based violence and child abuse in the country, Tanzania's Daily News reported Wednesday (November 27th).
Minister of Home Affairs Emmanuel Nchimbi announced the plan during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, an international campaign aimed to raise awareness about the issue.
About 45% of women aged between 15 to 49 have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, according to the 2010 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey.
Children are also at high risk, with one in three girls and one in seven boys experiencing sexual violence, and more than 70% experiencing some kind of violence before reaching the age of 18.
"The police force is committed to improving its response to survivors of [gender-based violence] and child abuse," Inspector General of Police Said Mwema said.
