Tanzanian police on Saturday (November 23rd) arrested a Nigerian national suspected of carrying four kilogrammes of cocaine at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), Tanzania's The Citizen reported.
John Chizugo, 29, had a consignment in his traveling bag and was headed to Rome via Addis Ababa, according to KIA's security chief Justine Kisusi. The suspect is believed to have started his journey from Arusha, Kisusi said.
The incident comes barely a week after Transport Minister Harrison Mwakyembe called on security officers at KIA to be vigilant as drug traffickers had shifted their base from Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.
"We have sealed almost all loopholes at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam," Mwakyembe said November 19th, according to Tanzania's Daily News. "It is therefore only natural for the drug racketeers to use KIA as their alternative terminal airport in Tanzania."
Mwakyembe warned the Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO) that the "next time something fishy occurs at the terminal, a number of officials at the KIA will be sent packing immediately".
KADCO Director of Finance and Corporate Services Bakari Murusuri said the airport formed a joint committee with police, intelligence and immigration departments, the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA), the Tanzania Airports Authority, airlines, the Tanzania Revenue Authority and other stakeholders to increase security at the airport.
