UN renews calls to continue fight against piracy in Somalia

Written By Mike Ntobi on Sunday, December 01, 2013 | 8:46 AM

The United Nations Security Council Monday (November 18th) reiterated calls on the international community to fight piracy off the coast of Somalia, which continues to threaten the delivery of humanitarian aid to the country.
The council called on the Somali government to work with international organisations to pass strict anti-piracy legislation to prosecute pirates and their collaborators operating within Somali territory.
Pirate networks "continue to rely on kidnapping and hostage-taking," the council said, noting that the profits "help generate funding to purchase weapons, gain recruits and continue their operations activities, thereby jeopardising the safety and security of civilians and restricting the flow of free commerce."
The council commended Kenya, Mauritius, Seychelles and Tanzania for their efforts to prosecute suspected pirates in national courts. The council then urged Somali authorities to step up anti-piracy efforts.
