Tanzania selected for $10 million climate change pilot programme.

Written By Mike Ntobi on Sunday, December 01, 2013 | 7:07 AM

Tanzania was selected to pioneer a Climate Services Adaptation Programme backed by $10 million, World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Secretary-General Michel Jarraud told President Jakaya Kikwete Thursday (November 21st) at a meeting in Warsaw, Poland.
The programme is the result of an agreement between the WMO and the Norwegian government. It aims to increase the resilience of some of the world's most vulnerable countries to climate change, providing seasonal climate forecasts for farmers, effective drought planning and assisted public health campaigns to limit climate-related disease outbreaks.
"We have chosen Tanzania because she is exemplary as far as metrological services and climate change issues are concerned," Jarraud said at the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Malawi was also selected to take part in the programme.
